Origin

The origin of aloe vera remains a mystery. Various theories claim that it originates in India, the Arabian peninsula or even South Africa. But one thing is clear, the remarkable properties of this plant belonging to the lily family have been known for several millennia. Aloe vera was already being used in Mesopotamia, in ancient Greece and in Egypt at the time of the pharaohs, to soothe injuries and burns. The Maya called it “the fountain of youth” and Cleopatra used it as a beauty product.

The plant thrives in dry, hot climates, which is why it has been cultivated for many years in subtropical regions, such as North Africa and Mexico.

The plant

There are over 300 species of aloe, but not all of them have valuable medicinal properties. The variety used in Forever Living Products is Aloe barbadensis Miller, which offers all of the beneficial properties.

It can be identified by its fleshy, serrated leaves. After two years, the central stem reaches a height of 2 m, topped with a flower, and the plant itself achieves a height of 90 cm. It’s at this point that the plant reaches maturity and the pulp can be extracted. The leaf is cut along its length and then the translucent pulp is harvested. The pulp does not keep well in an ambient environment, which is why it needs to be stabilised at a cold temperature. In order to do this, Forever Living Products uses a patented technique allowing the properties of the aloe vera to remain in optimal condition. The outer rind is used in the plantations as an organic fertiliser.
